Social Entrepreneurs

  • We look forward to your attendance at all of the sessions listed in this syllabus.
  • You will be assigned to a time slot for each Mock Investor Meeting scheduled on Sunday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 5.

Mock Investor Panelists

To fully prepare for the five panels that you will be providing feedback in, please join one of these two kickoff call options to align the group, held via Zoom. If you don’t see the invitations on your Google Calendar, please contact Karen at krunde@scu.edu.

Mentors and Panelists / Mentors at Large

You are invited to attend any of the sessions and events listed in this syllabus as you wish. We ask that at least one mentor per team attends each of the following events. For the Social Entrepreneur Reviews and Meetings, please join at least for the specific time your entrepreneur is presenting (see detailed schedule).

8:00AM - 8:00PM Guest Arrivals

  • All guests should plan on arriving between 8AM and 8PM on Friday, April 1 to check in. Dinner will be served at 6PM at Sonesta Suites.
  • Please let us know if you are unsure of how you are getting from the airport to Sonesta Suites or Santa Clara University. There are a few options for public transportation listed below.
  • Lodging will be at Sonesta Suites, across the street from the main Santa Clara University Campus and next to the Santa Clara Transit Center.
  • Address is: 481 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95050

 

Public Transportation from SJC to Santa Clara Transit Center:

  • The VTA bus (route 60) will transfer you for free from the San Jose Airport (SJC) to the Santa Clara Transit Center. Buses are available about every 20 minutes from the airport bus stop in Terminal A and Terminal B. See the full schedule here (select Weekday Southbound, and select which San Jose Airport Terminal you are departing from, and select Santa Clara Transit Center for where you are arriving).
  • The Santa Clara Transit Center is right next door to Sonesta Suites, and right across the street from Santa Clara University / Miller Center!

 

Public Transportation from SFO to Santa Clara Transit Center

  • At the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), you will need to make your way to the SFO BART Station (via walking or taking the free AirTrain from your terminal to the BART station).
  • Take the BART (SOUTH-bound) from SFO to the Millbrae Caltrain Transfer Platform. This will cost $4.80 in exact US change, or you can purchase a Clipper Card ahead of time. Credit cards and mobile pay are not accepted.
  • Take the Caltrain (SOUTH-bound) from Millbrae to the Santa Clara Transit Center.  You can purchase your Caltrain ticket at a kiosk directly at the Millbrae Caltrain station (it will be about $8.25 in cash, credit, or debit), or you can download the Caltrain Mobile ticketing app and pay with a credit or debit card, or you can purchase a Clipper Card ahead of time.
  • The Santa Clara Transit Center is right next door to Sonesta Suites, and right across the street from Santa Clara University / Miller Center! See campus map below.

6:00PM - Dinner at Sonesta Suites

  • Fight the jetlag and share a meal with your fellow social entrepreneurs while listening to an overview of Santa Clara University and Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship.

  • Join us in the Miller Center Office. Miller Center is on the Santa Clara University campus at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA. We are located in the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation (SCDI) building at the northeast corner, 4th floor.

10:00AM - Walk to Abby Sobrato Mall overlooking the Mission Church

  • Join your fellow entrepreneurs, mentors, and Miller Center Staff on the scenic Abby Sobrato Mall overlooking the Santa Clara Mission Church.

10:30AM - Individual Headshots and Group Pictures

  • Social entrepreneurs, staff, mentors, and fellows are invited to take professional headshots and group photos.

11:30AM - Walk back to SCDI Building

  • Miller Center staff will accompany you back to the Miller Center Office on the 4th floor of the SCDI Building.

12:00PM - Lunch and a History of Silicon Valley

  • Grab lunch in the Miller Center Office and hear about the unique history of one of the most innovative places in the world.
  • Hosted by long-time mentor and Stanford lecturer Bret Waters.

1:30PM - Program Kickoff

  • Join us in the Miller Center Office for a detailed review of the In-Residence program with information on what to expect and how to prepare to make the most out of the program.
  • Hosted by Karen Runde, Alex Pan, and Andrew Lieberman.

3:00PM - Icebreaker

At the Miller Center Office, Social Entrepreneurs and Mentors will break out into two separate groups:

  • Social Entrepreneurs ONLY: Gather with fellow cohort members for icebreaker activities. Hosted by Linda Keegan and Karen Runde.
  • Mentors ONLY: Gather with fellow mentors and discuss how to best support the entrepreneurs during the In-Residence program. Hosted by Lynne Anderson and Sharon Bunyard.

4:00PM - Walk outside to SCDI Courtyard

  • Miller Center staff will accompany you outside to the SCDI Courtyard located at the center of the main entrance to the building.

4:15PM - Social Entrepreneur and Mentor Networking

  • Gather in the SCDI Courtyard to network with the social entrepreneurs and mentors of the In-Residence program.
  • Hosted by Linda Keegan and Karen Runde.

5:15PM - Welcome Reception & 25th Anniversary Celebration

Join us in the SCDI Courtyard and get to know your fellow social entrepreneurs and the Miller Center community over a glass of wine and heavy appetizers.

9:00AM - Group Kickoff for 1st Mock Investor Meeting

  • Hosted by Alex Pan, Andrew Lieberman, and Steve White in the Miller Center Office.
  • Social enterprises will participate in two mock investor sessions during the In-Residence. The first meeting will simulate an introductory meeting with an impact investor, while the second will simulate a due diligence meeting. During these sessions, panelists will role-play as impact investors by asking clarifying questions, challenging the entrepreneur’s assumptions, and testing the entrepreneur’s knowledge of their business.
  • Our goal in these sessions is to help entrepreneurs not only get practice responding to investor questions, but to help them practice how to tactically manage a meeting and keep the conversation on track. After the role-play is completed, the panelists will break character and debrief with the entrepreneur.

9:30AM - 1st Mock Investor Meeting (in 8 breakout rooms)

Each social enterprise will have 60 minutes for their mock investor meeting and subsequent feedback.

  • Held in the Miller Center Office, 4th floor of the SCDI Building
  • For all mentors, learn first-hand from Miller Center’s superstar social entrepreneurs about what makes a great mentor.
  • Featuring alumni superstars Antonio Nuño, Manoj Sinha, Katherine Lucey, Alicia Wallace, and Lisa Heederik
  • Moderated by Lynne Anderson and Bret Waters

2:30PM - Bespoke Mentoring Sessions / Work Time

  • Social entrepreneurs, paired mentors, and bespoke mentors can find a spot in the Miller Center Office or designated surrounding areas for some dedicated work time.

5:00PM - CEO Roundtable and Wine Tasting

  • Located on the SCDI 3rd Floor Balcony.
  • Over a glass of wine, engage in a facilitated discussion with other Miller Center social entrepreneur alumni.
  • Please come prepared to discuss a current leadership challenge.
  • Featuring experienced Miller Center mentor facilitators Teri Eyre and Lance Descourouez, and alumni Super Stars Manoj Sinha, Antonio Nuño, Katherine Lucey, Alicia Wallace, and Lisa Heederik.

Monday, April 4

9:00AM - Public Speaking & Presentation Skills

Join us in the Miller Center Office for an opportunity to practice your delivery skills, learn strategies for managing anxiety when speaking publicly, and practice and receive feedback. We will work using a workshop setting to share practical tips for presenting within virtual settings and how to adjust our presentations when English is not our native language.

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Go through a refresher on presentation structuring best practices;
  • Practice delivery skills;
  • Share tips on managing challenging situations that might arise in pitch meetings.
  • Please come prepared to participate actively.

1:30PM - Bespoke Mentoring Sessions / Work Time / Peer Networking

  • Social entrepreneurs, paired mentors, and bespoke mentors can find a spot in the Miller Center Office or designated surrounding areas for some dedicated work time.
  • Social entrepreneurs may also use this time to network with their fellow entrepreneurs and other mentors.

3:00PM - Impact Measurement & Management Roundtable

Mentors and entrepreneurs are welcome to join us in the Miller Center Office for a roundtable on Impact Measurement and Management. We will be discussing challenges in the ecosystem and focusing on how to communicate your impact with investors. Come with questions you may have on your impact model and have a chance to learn and provide feedback to your peers.

4:30PM - Mentor Networking Reception

  • Join us in the SCDI Courtyard to meet up with fellow mentors, Miller Center staff, and the 16 participating In-Residence social enterprises. All mentors are welcome whether or not they are actively participating in the In-Residence. Heavy appetizers, wine, and beer will be served.
  • Hosted by Lynne Anderson and Sharon Bunyard.

9:00AM - Group Kickoff for 2nd Mock Investor Meeting

  • Hosted by Alex Pan, Andrew Lieberman, and Steve White in the Miller Center Office.
  • The second session will simulate a due diligence meeting with an impact investor.
  • The format will be similar to the first session, but the panelists will probe deeper into your full business plan, challenge assumptions, and discuss the details of your requested financing.

3:30PM - Bespoke Mentoring Sessions / Work Time

  • Social entrepreneurs, paired mentors, and bespoke mentors can find a spot in the Miller Center Office or designated surrounding areas for some dedicated work time.

6:00PM - Dinner in the Miller Center Office

  • After your dedicated work time with mentors, we will all reconvene back at the Miller Center Office in #4008 for dinner.

7:00PM - Peer-to-Peer Pitch Practice (ENTREPRENEURS ONLY)

Entrepreneurs will break out in 4 different groups, each group occupying a different area of the Miller Center Office. Each social enterprise will present their 2-minute pitch to their group, followed by 10 minutes of peer feedback.

Wednesday, April 6

9:00AM - Free Time

This day was designed for you to choose your own adventure!

Feel free to rest, catch up on work, meet with your mentors, and/or get out and explore!

Please reach out if you would like help setting up any activities. Here are some great options within an hour’s drive:

  • Take the Caltrain to San Francisco and visit Alcatraz Island, see the Golden Gate Bridge, eat dim sum in Chinatown, and have fresh pasta in Little Italy (1 hour drive, 2 hour train ride north)
  • Go on a hike in the Santa Cruz redwood forests, or visit the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk (45 min drive south)
  • Explore great eats, walkable downtown districts, parks, and museums in San Jose (10-15 min drive)
  • Check out electronics at the Apple Store, Microsoft Store, or Fry’s Electronics, or shop for other retail items at nearby Santana Row or Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall (10 min drive)

Contact Miller Center staff if you would like help renting a car. or taking public transportation. Staff may also be able to give you a ride somewhere.

  • Reconvene at the Miller Center Office in #4008 for lunch.

1:00PM - Office Hours / Final Pitch Prep

  • Feel free to use this time to consult Miller Center staff, work with your mentors, prepare for your final pitch at the Showcase, or do anything else that you need to do.

3:00PM - Showcase Walkthrough in the SCDI Courtyard

  • Gather in the SCDI Courtyard to review your pitch, understand the event flow, and visit the venue for the Showcase event. You will NOT have time to rehearse your full pitch.

6:00PM - Dinner in the Miller Center Office

4:00PM - Mentors, Panelists, and Content Leads ONLY - Feedback & Wrap-Up

  • Gather in the Miller Center Office to debrief on what worked and what can be improved upon.
  • Hosted by Lynne Anderson and Sharon Bunyard.

5:00PM - Celebration Dinner in the SCDI Courtyard

  • Join us for an informal evening to toast the accomplishments of the social entrepreneurs and the mentors who supported their ventures.

  • All guests should check out no earlier than 11AM and no later than 4PM. Please let us know if you are unsure of how you are getting to the airport from Sonesta Suites.
  • A few public transportation options are listed below:

 

Public Transportation from the Santa Clara Transit Center to SJC:

  • Locate the VTA bus (route 60) northbound at the Santa Clara Transit Center, which is right next to Sonesta Suites (see campus map below). Unfortunately it’s only free one-way when you’re departing from the airport, so when you are traveling to the San Jose Airport it will cost $2.50 in exact change (or get a Clipper Card ahead of time).
  • Buses are available about every 20 minutes, and they can drop you off at the airport bus stop in Terminal A or Terminal B. See the full  schedule here (select Weekday Northbound, select Santa Clara Transit Center for where you are departing from, and select which SJC Terminal you will be arriving at).

Public Transportation from the Santa Clara Transit Center to SFO

  • Locate the Caltrain station (NORTH-bound) at the Santa Clara Transit Center, which is right next to Sonesta Suites (see campus map below).
  • Take the Caltrain from the Santa Clara Transit Center to Millbrae.  You can purchase your Caltrain ticket at a kiosk directly on the Caltrain platform (it will be about $8.25 in cash, credit, or debit), or you can download the Caltrain Mobile ticketing app and pay with a credit or debit card, or you can purchase a Clipper Card ahead of time.
  • At the Millbrae Caltrain Station, exit and take the BART (NORTH-bound) from Millbrae to SFO. This will cost $4.80 in exact US change, or you can purchase a Clipper Card ahead of time. Credit cards and mobile pay are not accepted.
  • At the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), you will need to make your way from the SFO BART Station to the terminal you need to depart from (via walking or riding the free AirTrain from the BART station to your terminal).

Parking & Walking Instructions

Miller Center is on the Santa Clara University campus at 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA. We are located in the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation (SCDI) building at the northeast corner, 4th floor.

 

Enter Santa Clara University through the main entrance at Palm Drive and El Camino Real. Continue driving on Palm Drive and STOP at the Visitor Kiosk to pick up your free parking permit (needed on weekdays). Turn left to enter the Main Parking Structure and park, hanging your permit on your rearview mirror. Once parked, walk west (opposite of Stanton Field) to the double door entrance to the SCDI building. Enter the building and turn right at the first hallway (once you reach the café). Take Elevator #2 to the fourth floor*, and Miller Center is located across from the elevator at #4008 (see fourth floor map below).

 

*Please note that the elevators and stairs at the front wings of the building do not go all the way up to the fourth floor. You will need to be at the back of the SCDI building (closest to the Main Parking Structure) to get up to the 4th floor.
